Soak in the history

The Outer Banks is home to a bevy of historic attractions. Start with the Bodie Island Lighthouse — a 156-foot black-and-white-striped wonder built in 1871. The best part? You can climb the 214 steps all the way to the top and be rewarded with some breathtaking views. (Another noteworthy stop? Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.) Alternatively, make the drive to Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills and learn about the history of Wilbur and Orville Wright — two aviation pioneers who accomplished the world’s first successful flight. If you’re a fan of Elizabethan history, don’t miss The Lost Colony, Roanoke Island Festival Park and the Elizabethan Gardens on your visit.
